Cornwall Council is looking at introducing charges at 13 car parks which are currently free to use.

The proposals also include new winter charges at 11 car parks and motorhome charges at 10 locations.

Laura Wilton, from the Cornwall Bicycle Project, said the proposed parking charges could have a significant impact on cycling groups who regularly use the Wenfordbridge car park as a meeting point.

She said:

“I think it will act as a deterrent. There's no public transport that links to these places – the only way to get there is to drive out.

“We think is an unfair charge. It is putting a price on accessing activity.”

Wilton also raised concerns about the timing of the proposals, saying introducing new charges during the cost-of-living crisis could discourage people from taking part in outdoor activities.

She added:

“They're having to choose then between whether or not they're going to spend that on coming out for an activity, or whether that's going to go towards food and other rising costs.”

Public consultation ends today

A public consultation has now begun on proposed changes to the council’s off-street parking order. Residents and car park users are being invited to give their views before any decisions are made.

Users of a popular free car park at The Fairground in Helston have already raised concerns about the possible introduction of charges.

Council response

Cornwall Council said the proposals are aimed at managing parking more effectively and supporting wider transport goals.

A council spokesperson said the changes would help to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and support sustainable transport across Cornwall.

The council added that public feedback will play an important role in shaping how parking is managed locally, while also supporting Cornwall’s environmental and economic goals.

No final decisions have yet been made, and the consultation remains open.
