Major rescue operation after cargo ship loses power near Wolf Rock lighthouse

The crew onboard are unhurt and safe

A cargo ship has lost power off the coast of Land's End, triggering a major rescue operation this morning.

Lifeboats and the HM Coastguard were called out to the cargo ship, which got into trouble near the Wolf Rock Lighthouse.

The crew onboard are unhurt and safe.

The Penlee and Sennen Cove lifeboats are at the scene, along with a coastguard helicopter, with a second coastguard helicopter on standby.

The ferry The Scillonian was also on standby, but is now operating as normal.

In a statement sent to us, a spokesperson from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “HM Coastguard is coordinating the response after a vessel off the Isles of Scilly reported losing power near Wolf Rock lighthouse.

"The crew on board are reported to be uninjured and safe. A tug has been sent to assist.

"A coastguard helicopter has been sent along with Penlee and Sennen Cove RNLI lifeboats in case the crew needs to be evacuated. A second helicopter is standby in case it is needed.”
