Car crashes into house and sparks fire near Bodmin

People and a large number of dogs have been evacuated after a crash sparked a house fire in Cornwall.

A vehicle crashed into a house on the A38 near Bodmin at around 7.30pm on Sunday evening.

The car and building both then caught alight.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were all called to the scene and the driver was cut free from the vehicle.

Officers say the driver of the car was conscious and breathing although in heavy shock and substantial pain.

He was taken to Derriford Hospital where he was confirmed to have a broken arm and other soft tissue injuries.

The man was later arrested on suspicion of arson with intent and has been bailed. He currently remains in hospital.

Police have confirmed that the occupants of the house and the dogs were not hurt.

"Police are investigating the circumstances of a car colliding into a house on the A38 at Glynn Valley, near Bodmin, yesterday evening, Sunday 18th October.

"The incident occurred at around 7.30pm with the collision causing the car and house to catch fire.

"The scene was initially attended by officers from Devon & Cornwall Police Roads Policing Team who evacuated the occupants of the house and a large number of dogs, who were unhurt in the incident.

"Paramedics and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service also attended.

"The single male occupant of the vehicle was extracted from the car shortly before police arrived and taken to Derriford Hospital where he was confirmed to have a broken arm and soft tissue injuries, which are non-life-threatening.

"A 27-year-old man from Bodmin was subsequently arrested on suspicion of arson with intent and released on police bail until Monday 26th October pending further enquiries. He remains in hospital.

"Collision investigation officers and fire scene investigation officers attended the scene and the road was closed for several hours to allow a thorough investigation and prolonged damping down by fire crews, to take place.

"Subsequent investigation work is being conducted by CID officers."
