Car crashes over side of bridge and falls into water in Newquay
Officers say the driver had a lucky escape
A car has crashed over the side of a bridge and fallen into the water in Newquay.
Emergency services were called just before 10am on Tuesday morning to reports of a single vehicle collision.
It is understood the car collided with the bridge and photos show it ended up head-first in the river below.
Newquay Response Team say the driver was 'very lucky' as they only suffered minor injuries.
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service were also called to help with recovery of the vehicle.
A Devon & Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 9.50am to Watergate Road, to reports of a single vehicle collision.
"It was reported that a car had been in collision with a bridge and was hanging off the side.
"The driver is safely out of the vehicle and the fire service and recovery are completing recovery of the vehicle."
Inrix Traffic and Travel have now confirmed that the road has been cleared and has reopened.
They said: "Road cleared and traffic returned to normal, accident cleared on B3276 Alexandra Road in both directions from Trevelgue Road to Lewarne Road."
