The MP for Falmouth is ramping up calls for a vaccination clinic in the town to help tackle the new variant of coronavirus.

Cherilyn Mackrory has been working with the NHS and local stakeholders to secure a site.

She says to hit the pace of vaccination that’s needed to tackle Omicron variant, Falmouth needs its own vaccination hub.

Cornwall’s NHS is aiming to deliver 172,000 booster vaccines by the end of December – around 9,000 a day – following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Sunday evening urging people to get protected from the latest strain.

Over 250,000 people in Cornwall have now had a coronavirus booster jab and the latest available figures show more than 10,000 have been given out in the last few days alone.

Walk-in vaccination clinics are running across the Duchy and it has already been confirmed that the mass vaccination centre at Stithians Showground is reopening.

Now work is underway to make sure Falmouth gets its own clinic.

Posting on Facebook on Monday, Cherilyn said: "I have today ramped up calls for a vaccination clinic in Falmouth following the Prime Minister’s press conference on Sunday evening urging people to ‘Get Boosted Now’.

"I have been working with colleagues in the NHS and local stakeholders to secure a vaccination clinic in Falmouth. Good progress has been made on this, and it’s looking promising, but I am now renewing calls for a vaccination clinic in Falmouth following the Prime Minister’s plea on Sunday evening.

"Over the past year we have shown that vaccination is the key to beating COVID-19, and that it works. The UK was the first country in the world to administer a vaccine, we delivered the fastest roll-out in Europe, and we have begun the fastest booster campaign too, with over half a million jabs delivered over the weekend.

"We are now facing an emergency in our battle with the new variant, Omicron, and we must urgently reinforce our wall of vaccine protection to keep our friends and loved ones safe.

"To hit the pace we need, we will need to match the NHS’s best vaccination day yet – and then beat it day after day. This will require an extraordinary effort. However, we will only be able to achieve this if we can hit the numbers we need to in places like Falmouth.

"I will continue to work with NHS colleagues and local stakeholders to deliver a vaccination clinic in Falmouth."
