Police confirm big warehouse fire in Cornwall is no longer being treated as arson

Officers originally thought the blaze was suspicious

Police have confirmed a big warehouse fire that broke out in Cornwall is no longer being treated as arson.

Firefighters from across the Duchy were called out to Longdowns, between Penryn and Helston, on Monday night (31st January).

They called in back-up, including a water carrier and a welfare unit, to the blaze involving skip waste.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue used hydrant on the A394 and spent Tuesday morning damping down.

Officers previously said they believed the blaze was suspicious but following further enquiries it is no longer being treated as a suspected arson case.

What happened?

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service were called to a fire involving an industrial building at around 7.45pm on Monday night.

On arrival the first appliances requested further assistance and another two appliances were mobilised along with a water carrier.

Pumping appliances from Falmouth, Helston and Tolvaddon were in attendance along with water carriers from Helston and Wadebridge, and the welfare unit from St Dennis.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets and main jets to extinguish the fire.

Update at 00:34: Good progress was being made and firefighters were damping down and turning over.

Update 6am: Three appliances and two Water Carriers remainded on scene damping down waste and turning over

Update 7am: Two appliances and two water carriers were still on the scene.

They remained on the scene for some time damping down. Devon and Cornwall Police & Cornwall Highways were requested to assist with traffic management on the A394, as crews used a hydrant to replenish their water tanks.
