A busy main road in Cornwall - described as one of the Duchy's most dangerous - is going to get average speed cameras.

The A39 between Penryn and Truro has experienced multiple serious crashes over the years, including the most recent fatal collision in 2019.

Now, after a public consultation and a string of campaigns, Cornwall Council has confirmed equipment has been ordered for the stretch through Perranarworthal.

A spokesperson said: "A public consultation for the Average Speed Camera scheme through Perranarworthal has been carried out. Equipment has been ordered.

"Construction is expected to begin early in 2023, with exact dates to be confirmed".

Posting on social media when the scheme was first announced, local MP, Cherilyn Mackrory, said: "Fantastic news that the A39 ‘Falmouth gateway’ Foundry area is to receive average speed cameras.

"Community Speedwatch volunteers here, led by Stuart Douglas, have worked hard with Cllr Peter Williams, Perranarworthal Parish Council, Devon and Cornwall Roads Policing, Cornwall Council and CORMAC to make this happen over the last three years.

"The last fatal incident here was in 2019.

"Excellent work by a Perranarworthal Speedwatch and I was delighted to see their work first hand last year".

We have approached Cornwall Council for further comment and updates will appear below.
