Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after 'serious assault' in St Austell

Police are investigating reports of a serious assault in St Austell, after a young man was found with a knife wound to his chest.

Officers say the casualty, who is in his 20s, was discovered in High Cross Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

He is believed to have been injured shortly after midnight following an altercation in nearby Old Vicarage Place.

The man was treated by paramedics before being taken to Treliske with injuries that are described as serious but not life-threatening.

Anyone who saw what happened or who has information about the incident is being urged to contact police.

The force has confirmed another man in his twenties has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

In a statement they said: "Police and ambulance were called around 12.35am today (26 October) following reports that a man had been seriously assaulted in St Austell.

"The man, in his 20s, was located in High Cross Street and had sustained a knife wound to his chest.

"He was treated by paramedics and taken to Treliske Hospital with injuries now described as serious but not life-threatening.

"It is believed that he was assaulted during an altercation between a group of people in nearby Old Vicarage Place sometime between 12.10am and 12.25am.

"Firearms officers and local officers attended.

"A short time after the incident, a man in his 20s from St Austell was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and he remains in police custody.

"Police are investigating to circumstances of the incident and asking anyone with information to contact them via 101@dc.police.uk or by telephone on 101, quoting crime reference CR/093318/21".
