Man, 20, arrested following fatal crash in south-east Cornwall

After a crash in south-east Cornwall, a young man has been arrested on suspicion of causing both death and serious injury by dangerous driving.

A 19-year-old man died after two cars collided at Torpoint on Friday afternoon (7th October).

An elderly woman, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was among four casualties taken to Derriford Hospital for treatment.

The collision happened at around 2.30pm, closing the A374 until the early hours of Saturday morning.

Devon & Cornwall Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam footage, to come forward.

A force spokesperson said: "Police investigating a fatal road traffic collision on the A374 at Torpoint on Friday 7th October are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

"Officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a black Renault Clio and a black Kia Rio at around 2.30pm.

"As a result of the collision, a 19-year-old male was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

"Four other people were also injured and were taken to Derriford Hospital for treatment.

"A woman in her 80s from the Torpoint area sustained life-threatening injuries.

"A man, also in his 80s from the Torpoint area, sustained a number of fractures.

"A man in his late teens, from Newcastle, sustained serious arm and spinal injuries.

"A man in his 20s sustained minor injuries.

"Officers from the Roads Policing Team and Serious Collision Investigation Team attended to conduct a thorough investigation to establish how the collision occurred.

"The road was handed to highways at around 1am on Saturday 8th October".

Police confirmed a 20-year-old man from Newcastle was arrested on suspicion of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released under investigation, pending further enquiries.
