It has been revealed that 39 patients with coronavirus were being looked after in hospitals across Cornwall this week.

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust was caring for 34 Covid patients in hospital as of Tuesday, figures show.

NHS England data shows the number of people being treated in hospital for Covid-19 by 8am on August 31 was up from 23 on the same day the previous week.

The number of beds at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust occupied by people who tested positive for Covid-19 increased by 14 in the last four weeks – 28 days ago, there were 20.

Meanwhile the figures show the Cornwall Partnership Trust was caring for five coronavirus patients in hospital as of Tuesday.

That was up from one on the same day the previous week.

There were three beds occupied by Covid-19 patients four weeks ago in Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Across England there were 6,293 people in hospital with Covid as of August 31, with 879 of them in mechanical ventilation beds.

The number of Covid-19 patients hospitalised nationally rose by 23% in the last four weeks, while the number on mechanical ventilators increased by 13%.

The figures also show that two new Covid patients were admitted to hospital in Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust in the week to August 29.

It comes as the number of coronavirus cases in Cornwall increased by 374 in the last 24 hours, official figures show.

A total of 37,231 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Cornwall when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on September 3 (Friday), up from 36,857 on Thursday.

The rate of infection in Cornwall now stands at 6,469 cases per 100,000 people, far higher than the England average of 10,548.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 42,065 over the period, to 6,904,969.

However, there were no new coronavirus deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Cornwall.

The dashboard shows 504 people had died in the area by September 3 (Friday) – which was unchanged from Thursday.

It means there have been four deaths in the past week, which is a decrease on nine the previous week.

They were among 7,110 deaths recorded across the South West.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Cornwall.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death, so some areas might see their figures revised down.

The figures also show that four in five people in Cornwall have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The latest figures show 397,842 people had received both jabs by September 2 (Thursday) – 79% of those aged 16 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

Across England, 79% of people aged 16 and above had received a second dose of the jab.

Unlike at local level, the national rate was calculated using mid-2020 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
