The number of coronavirus cases in Cornwall increased by 1,902 over the weekend, official figures show – and one more death was recorded.

A total of 91,000 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Cornwall when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on January 10 (Monday), up from 89,098 on Friday.

Latest weekly figures show Cornwall recorded 6,618 new cases in the week to Wednesday 5th January, taking the Duchy's case rate to 1,149.9 per 100,000 people.

However the figure is far higher in some areas, including Hayle and Liskeard at over 1,300, Newquay West at over 1,400, St Columb Minor and Porth at over 1,600 and Torpoint, where the case rate reached 2,291.1 per 100,000 people.

Several NHS trusts have declared a 'critical incident', including Plymouth's Derriford Hospital.

Cornwall has been operating at 'critical incident' level since October, but NHS Kernow says it is as badly affected by Covid absences as other parts of the country.

There was also one more coronavirus death recorded over the weekend in Cornwall.

The dashboard shows 636 people had died in the area by January 10 (Monday) – up from 635 on Friday.

It means there have been two deaths in the past week, which is a decrease on five the previous week.

They were among 8,393 deaths recorded across the South West.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Cornwall.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death.

Figures reported on a Monday are likely to be lower as a result of a lag in reporting deaths over the weekend.

The figures also show that four in five people in Cornwall have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The latest figures show 430,706 people had received both jabs by January 9 (Sunday) – 81% of those aged 12 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

Across England, 83% of people aged 12 and above had received a second dose of the jab.

Unlike at local level, the national rate was calculated using mid-2020 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.

The latest coronavirus figures for Cornwall can be found on the government's website.
