The number of coronavirus cases in Cornwall increased by 1,447 in the last 24 hours, official figures show – and one more death was recorded.

A total of 133,684 cases had been confirmed in Cornwall when the UK daily dashboard was updated on March 17th (Thursday), up from 132,237 on Wednesday.

In England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, if one person tests positive for the virus more than 90 days after the first infection, two infection episodes will be recorded, according to the UK Health Security Agency.

Latest weekly figures show Cornwall recorded 5,127 cases in the seven days to Saturday 12th March, giving us a case rate of 890.8 per 100,000 people.

As of Monday 14th March, 95 patients with coronavirus were being treated in Cornwall's main hospitals and 55 care homes are not taking any new residents due to outbreaks.

Both the Royal Cornwall Hospital and Partnership Foundation trusts suspended visits at the end of last week, warning coronavirus continues to have a "significant impact".

At 3.30pm on Friday 18th March, Cornwall Council's Public Health Team are holding a Q&A on Facebook Live about living safely with Covid.

There was also one more coronavirus death recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Cornwall.

The dashboard shows 714 people had died in the area by March 17th (Thursday) – up from 713 on Wednesday.

It means there have been 10 deaths in the past week, which is an increase on six the previous week.

They were among 9,283 deaths recorded across the South West.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Cornwall.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death.

The figures also show that more than two-thirds of people in Cornwall have received a booster dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The latest figures show 365,436 people had received a booster or third dose by March 16th (Wednesday) – 69% of those aged 12 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

A total of 440,603 people (83%) had received two jabs by that date.

Across England, 66% of people aged 12 and above had received a booster.

Unlike at local level, the national rate was calculated using mid-2020 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
