A stretch of the A30 in mid-Cornwall has reopened, following what police have confirmed was a fatal crash.

The collision in the Fraddon area involved a car towing a caravan and witnesses had taken to social media to say one vehicle is on its roof and the air ambulance was at the scene.

Officers say an elderly driver from Truro died at the scene of the collision and his family have been told

One post reads: "Just passed nasty crash on #A30 westbound before the #Newquay turning, also affecting eastbound lanes.

"Flipped vehicles and multiple cars trying to help them so please slow down approaching!".

The road was closed in both directions on Monday night, between the junctions for the A391 at Lanivet and the A39 at Indian Queens.

The eastbound carriageway reopened that evening, while westbound was closed until shortly before 6am on Tuesday (31st May).

Another witness tweeted: "Caravan and 4x4 on its roof on A30 westbound between Cornwall services and Indian Queens".

Other drivers in the area have described the incident as a "bad accident", adding that "the air ambulance is out".

A statement from National Highways South West says: "The A30 in Cornwall is closed in both directions between the A391 (Lanivet) and A39 (Indian Queens).

"This is following a single vehicle collision. A car towing a caravan has left the carriageway and overturned.

"Emergency services are responding at the scene. National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with traffic management.

"Diversion route details being established.

"Road users are advised to expect delays on the approach to the incident and allow extra time for their journeys".
