A landslip caused the A30 at Bodmin Moor to be closed in both directions.
Inrix Traffic and Travel says there was rubble on the road and slow traffic in the area.
Listeners have told Pirate FM that the heavy rainfall seems to have washed gravel, debris and water across the carriageway.
Police are on the scene and a clean up operation is now underway.
"Police were notified about gravel and water debris, possibly the result of a landslide, on westbound carriageway of the A30 Cardinham Downs/Preeze Cross, Bodmin Moor, causing traffic to drive round it, at around 7.40am this morning.
"The carriageway was closed in both directions, traffic divert via A388 and A38 in place as the highways authority arranges a clear-up."
