Investigation launched after 500 dead fish found in river near Camelford

The Environment Agency is trying to work out what has caused the incident

Over 500 fish have been found dead in a river in north Cornwall.

The discovery was made during routine monitoring a the River Inny, at Trewinnow near Camelford.

Environment Agency officers found 200 dead bullheads on Wednesday, and a further 300 more dead fish the next day. They have now been removed.

They were found in a 1.5km stretch of the river and fish were also seen in distress.

An investigation is now being carried out to try and establish what caused the incident.

The Environment Agency said: “During a routine monitoring visit on 4 Aug 2021, an Environment Agency officer saw several dead fish in the River Inny at Trewinnow near Camelford. An assessment later that day revealed that at least 200 bullheads and a small number of trout had died. These fish were removed.

“Officers returning to the river the next day (5 Aug 2021) found up to 300 more dead fish. The dead fish so far have been found in a 1.5 km stretch from Trewinnow to Treglasta Bridge. Fish have also been seen in distress over this stretch.

“An investigation is underway into the cause of this incident and potential sources of pollution are being examined.”
