More than 48 miles of resurfacing works are set to be carried out across Cornwall.

A new £9.1m programme, using the reallocation of capital funds, will see the resurfacing of roads that were badly damaged by bad weather last winter, alongside work that had been postponed due to budget restraints.

The Council say the length of the improvements is the same distance as between Camborne and Liskeard.

Improvements to pavements and footpaths will also be carried out using the funding.

This new investment is on top of £5m provided by the government to repair potholes across the county, and £40m the Council spends on road maintenance annually.

The investment will be focused on areas where roads have particularly deteriorated, including Camborne and Penwith.

Approximately 24 miles of the refurbishments include bus routes, whilst around 10 miles will feature cycle paths.

Cornwall Council’s outgoing portfolio holder for transport Cllr Connor Donnithorne says "the £9.1m is one of the biggest capital investments in recent years."

"I’m acutely aware that like every council across the country we are having to be very careful how we are spending our money but £9m on this and £5m on potholes is a £14m cash injection and it’s capital which is key to long-term infrastructure.”

Cllr Donnithorne added that money will be spent outside tourism hotspots, including more pothole repairs and road inspections in rural areas.

"People will start seeing massive road improvements," Cllr Donnithorne said.
