Cornwall & Isles of Scilly record 416 new cases of coronavirus over the weekend

Latest figures from Public Health England show more than 16,500 locals have tested positive since the pandemic began

The number of recorded coronavirus cases in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly increased by 416 over the weekend, official figures show.

Public Health England figures show that 16,596 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Monday (June 28th) in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, up from 16,180 the same time on Friday.

The health body recently changed the way it records the figures.

Cases identified through a positive lateral flow test - those which can deliver results within half an hour - will no longer be counted if the person then takes a PCR test, which is sent to a lab to be checked, and receives a negative result within three days.

These cases are now being removed daily.

What are the most recent figures for coronavirus cases in Cornwall?

In the seven days to Wednesday 23rd June, Cornwall had recorded almost 400 new cases of the Delta variant of coronavirus.

In the sane week, Cornwall recorded 849 new cases of coronavirus.

Cumulatively, Cornwall and Devon have recorded the highest number of new coronavirus cases in a week mid January, at over 1,800.

The rate of infection in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly now stands at 2,902 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 7,350.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 55,210 over the period, to 4,755,078.

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly's cases were among the 239,368 recorded across the South West, a figure which rose by 3,326 over the period.

Cumulative case counts include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.
