It has been revealed that 95% of children due to start primary school in Cornwall this year have been given a place at their top choice school.

Cornwall Council received 5130 applications for reception places for September 2021. Of those, 4917 have been offered a place at their first preference school, which is over 95.7% of the total applicants.

Over 99% of applicants have been offered a place at a school they named as one of their three preferences.

“We are pleased so many children and families have received the news they wanted on National Offer Day.

“We work in partnership with schools in Cornwall to ensure as many children as possible can attend their preferred school and I would like to thank them for their support.”

But Cornwall Council says it recognises that some families may be disappointed by their allocation for this September.

Parents are being reminded of the appeals process which has been put in place by the Department for Education.

You can find more information about the appeals process here.

“All applications received by the deadline are considered equally in the allocation process. This year we have seen a very slight increase in the number of late applications for school places, which is understandable, considering the impact of the pandemic.

“We ask parents to apply by the deadline because late applications are always a concern as they reduce the chance of families getting a place at their preferred school.”
