Cornwall & Isles of Scilly record 112 new cases of coronavirus in 24 hours

Latest figures from Public Health England show more than 16,700 locals have tested positive since the pandemic began

The number of recorded coronavirus cases in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly increased by 112 in the last 24 hours, official figures show.

Public Health England figures show that 16,708 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Tuesday (June 29th) in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, up from 16,596 the same time on Monday.

The health body recently changed the way it records the figures.

Cases identified through a positive lateral flow test - those which can deliver results within half an hour - will no longer be counted if the person then takes a PCR test, which is sent to a lab to be checked, and receives a negative result within three days.

These cases are now being removed daily.

In the seven days to Thursday 24th June, Cornwall recorded 875 new cases of coronavirus.

Cumulatively, Cornwall and Devon have recorded the highest number of new coronavirus cases in a week since mid-January, at over 1,800.

The rate of infection in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly now stands at 2,922 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 7,379.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 19,943 over the period, to 4,557,567.

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly's cases were among the 240,578 recorded across the South West, a figure which rose by 1,210 over the period.

Cumulative case counts include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.
