1,000 primary school children from Camborne have taken part in a Cornish 'mass sing'.

The idea behind the project is to make young people proud of Cornish identity and their culture.

Today (Wednesday 6 March), participating school children, who are all aged between four and eleven, have come to Truro’s Hall for Cornwall.

The Hall for Cornwall event, which is also being attended by Camborne born international rugby hero, Josh Matavesi and song-writing legend, Harry Glasson, will provide children with the opportunity to experience a live performance and instil pride in their Cornish history and heritage. Schools involved in the project include Penponds, Rosemellin Primary School, Troon Community Primary School, St Meriadoc CE Junior Academy, Roskear, Weeth, Crowan Primary School, Kehelland Village School, Trevithick Learning Academy and St John’s Catholic Primary School.

Throughout February, Cornish folk singer-songwriter Will Keating ran music and singing workshops at ten Camborne primary schools, as part of his new Camborne Schools Project.

With some of the highest areas of deprivation in Cornwall, Will’s Camborne Schools Project aims to inspire a sense of pride and contribute to the general wellbeing of young people in the town. It’s thought the project will have an immediate benefit on the lives of approximately 6,500 people including the children involved, parents and guardians and school staff.

Commenting on the Camborne Schools Project, singer Will Keating, says: "It is so special for me to be taking 1,000 primary school children from the Camborne area to the Hall for Cornwall. Not only will we have great fun, the whole process will be uplifting and educational too, reinforcing pride in the children about where they are from and strengthening their cultural identity. This is very much a community project, and I am so thankful to Camborne Town Council, Hall for Cornwall, The Chaos Group, Cornwall My Home, Warrens Bakery, Lakeside Films and Lowender for their support. Without them all, I never could have achieved this."

Louise Moye, Marketing Director at Warrens Bakery, adds: “Warrens Bakery is delighted to be supporting Will’s Camborne Schools Project. As the oldest Cornish Pasty maker in the world and a proud Cornish business, it was a natural fit when Will approached us for support. It’s a privilege to help support young Cornish voices and empower their musical journey and sense of Cornish identity.”
