Work to restore an Iron Age roundhouse in Peterborough, destroyed by suspected arsonists, to its former glory is due to start today.

Officials at Flag Fen Archaeology Park say it will take around nine months to rebuild the structure that was destroyed last month.

More than £17,000 has been raised since.

This had the potential to be devastating

Jacqueline Mooney, General Manager at Flag Fen, said:

"Whether this was an act of vandalism or a mistake, this had the potential to be devastating."

"It put our school visit programme at risk for this autumn."

"We asked our local community for help to rebuild, and the response was incredible."

"With their help we've been able to accelerate the completion of our new Bronze Age roundhouse build."

"The love for Flag Fen has been shown in donations of time, materials and money."

The response was incredible

This event will mark the first step in bringing back the structure, laying both the symbolic and practical foundations of the project.

Activities will include marking out the roundhouse footprint, coppicing willow and hazel for building materials, timber splitting for rafters and stakes and traditional wattling demonstrations.
