Commuters across Cambridgeshire are being urged to check before they travel this Easter weekend.

The warning comes as planned engineering works are taking place on parts of the Greater Anglia rail network between today (Good Friday) and Easter Monday.

This includes renewing an existing signalling system along routes that connect Cambridge, Ely, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket.

"The reason it's done at times like these is because fewer people are travelling compared to other times," Jonathan Denby, Greater Anglia's head of corporate affairs, said.

"There's never a perfect time to do it, so it's trying to find the times when it's least disruptive."

Which routes are affected?

  • Cambridge and Ely via Cambridge North
  • Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds via Newmarket

Buses will replace trains between Cambridge and Bury St. Edmunds, as well as between Ely and Cambridge.

“Although services on most Greater Anglia routes will be running normally over Easter, there is some essential engineering work taking place at some key locations on our network," Martin Beable, Greater Anglia's managing director, said.

"It’s vital that this work is carried out to maintain high punctuality and reliability standards, while also making the railway fit for the future."
