Sutton Coronation party aims to put ‘heart back into villages’
High Street party to take place in honour of King Charles III coronation
Organisers of a Coronation street party in Sutton are hoping that it will help rebuild community spirit in the village and other local communities.
Members of the Sutton Feast group are holding a party along the High Street today to mark the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
Cakes, refreshments and live music will be on hand for those wishing to attend the free event.
Stanley Smith, member of the Sutton Feast committee, hopes weather conditions will stay fine for the big day.
“We hope Mother Nature will come along, bring the weather and hope the village will turn up,” he said.
“This is an event organised by a small team of people within the village, for the village.
“We’d like people to come along, say hello and enjoy what this national event is going to be.”
"If this is a catalyst to draw people together, it's a win win"
The street party takes place between 12pm and 5pm, but it is not just to recognise a significant moment in British history.
Stanley believes it is more about one event.
“We were here in 1977 (for the late Queen’s Silver Jubilee); it is part of the backbone of Sutton,” he added.
“Many villages are becoming dormitories and we want people to say hello to neighbours, non-neighbours, and get involved in putting the heart back into villages and local communities.
“If this is a catalyst to draw people together again, it’s a win win situation.”
