A watchdog has opened an investigation into the East West Rail project between Oxford and Cambridge.

The National Audit Office is assessing the economic and strategic case for the £5 billion rail link.

The two cities would be connected via a new section of track between Bedford and Cambridge.

This investigation will examine:

  • how the context for the East West Rail project has changed over time
  • the Department for Transport’s assessments of the economic and strategic case for the East West Rail project
  • the cross-government working to plan and deliver the intended outcomes
