Serial shoplifter banned from Cambridgeshire supermarkets
27-year-old sentenced and given a three-year ban
A serial shoplifter in Cambridgeshire has been banned from major supermarket chains and other local shops after stealing items worth hundreds of pounds.
Darnell Baverstock, 27, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, on Monday 12th January at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court.
He was also issued a three-year criminal behaviour order, preventing him from entering any Sainsbury's or Tesco store in the county, as well as other shops he targeted during his offences.
Baverstock, of Eastfield Road, Peterborough, started his spree on 24th November, stealing laundry products worth over £200 from Aldi in Flaxland, Bretton, Peterborough. Later that day, he attempted to steal alcohol from a nearby Sainsbury’s but was challenged by security staff. Undeterred, Baverstock returned to the same Sainsbury’s two days later and made off with items worth over £230.
His crimes escalated as he stole a woman’s bank card in the New England area of Peterborough on 30th November, and items worth more than £300 from Sainsbury’s in Oxney Road, Parnwell, on 2nd December. He also targeted the Co-op in Loxley, Werrington, on 7th December.
Baverstock admitted five counts of shop theft, attempted theft from a shop, and theft from a person.
PC Sam Malton, from the Spree Offender Team, said: “Baverstock’s repeated offending caused significant loss and disruption to the shops involved.
“We will continue to work closely with retailers to identify and deal robustly with prolific offenders who persistently steal from shops.
“The criminal behaviour order is an important tool to protect shops and staff from further loss and intimidation. If Baverstock breaches the order, he faces being brought straight back before the courts.”
