Driver jailed following six-minute pursuit through East Cambridgeshire
Ramadan continued driving before abandoning the car and fleeing on foot
A man has been jailed after leading police on a dangerous high-speed pursuit through East Cambridgeshire.
Just after midnight on Sunday (26 October), officers on patrol in Soham spotted a silver Mercedes A150 and carried out checks which revealed the vehicle had no insurance.
When officers signalled for the car to stop, the driver Yunis Ramadan, accelerated away at hight speed. During the six-minute pursuit, Ramadan reached 72mph in a 50mph zone, overtook a lorry on a blind bend and later hit 80mph in a 60mph zone heading towards Ely.
A stinger device was deployed to bring the vehicle to a halt, but Ramadan continued driving before abandoning the car and fleeing on foot into a nearby field, where he was arrested.
At Peterborough Magistrates’ Court last week (27 October), Ramadan, 25, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and possession of cannabis.
He was sentenced to 36 weeks in prison and disqualified from driving for 18 months.
PC Oliver Wadsworth, from the Road Policing Unit, said: “Ramadan put the lives of his two passengers and other road users at risk while he drove dangerously over a prolonged period of time.”
