An artist's impression of what the rebuilt Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon may look like has been revealed, as the Trust prepares the site for redevelopment.

North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust says the wheels are in motion for the hospital's new chapter, as it looks to rid all traces of RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete).

In a statement, they said, "We have already been working with architects on what a new hospital will look like and have been holding workshops with our staff to gather their expert view on what we need to best care for patients and how departments will link to provide a seamless patient journey.

"It has been great to work together to provide a hospital which will not only be a great place to work, but also provide the best facilities for our patients in the future."

"Although we are in the very early stages of our plans."

Hinchingbrooke Hospital was one of 5 across the UK found to have significant amounts of RAAC, a lightweight type of concrete used to construct parts of the NHS estate in the past but has a limited lifespan, after which it deteriorates significantly.

Two year ago, NHS asked the government to prioritise the rebuilding of these hospitals given the risks they pose to patients and staff- the full extent of which has come to light since the New Hospital Programme was first announced in 2020.

When these plans were revealed in 2023, Health and Social Care Secretary Steve Barclay, who's North East Cambridgeshire 's MP, said:

“These five hospitals are in pressing need of repair and are being prioritised so patients and staff can benefit from major new hospital buildings, equipped with the latest technology.

“On top of this I’m strengthening our New Hospital Programme by today confirming that it is expected to represent more than £20 billion of new investment in hospital infrastructure."

He's also pledged that the redevelopment works will be finished by 2030.

Patients and visitors to the hospital recently may have noticed that some construction work at the rear of the hospital site has begun.

This is to build the Main Theatres block which will house seven state-of-the-art operating theatres.
