A Peterborough man hid from police in a rubbish bin after attacking a former friend and driving at dangerous speeds through the city centre.
Yanick Samedo, 26, of All Saints Road, attacked the man with a two-foot-long baton in Broadway at around 4am on Sunday, 27 April.
He fled the scene in a black Peugeot 208 with two others, but CCTV tracked the car travelling at more than 80mph in a 40mph zone. Despite initially failing to stop, the car eventually pulled over in South Street, Stanground — where officers later discovered Samedo hiding in a bin.
Police found he had been driving while disqualified, uninsured, and over the legal alcohol limit. A roadside breath test gave a reading of 40 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35.
The victim was taken to hospital with shoulder injuries and a fractured wrist that required surgery.
Samedo appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on Tuesday, 26 August, where he admitted grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon, failing to stop, drink driving, and driving while disqualified and uninsured.
He was handed an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work. He was also banned from driving for one year and 11 months — 12 months for this offence and 11 months left from a previous disqualification.
On top of this, he was issued with an Alcohol Abstinence and Monitoring Requirement, which imposes a 120-day ban on drinking alcohol. The condition is enforced by an ankle tag designed to detect alcohol and reduce reoffending.
PC Sam Malton, who investigated, said:
“The weapon Samedo used was a metal gas strut adapted with the intention of causing injury.
“He drove off after the attack with no regard for other road users, driving dangerously at high speed through built-up areas, over mini roundabouts, and ignoring all road signs.
“Thankfully, no-one was injured, and I hope in the cool light of day Samedo will reflect on his actions.”
