Posh lose out on Wembley final after dramatic play-off tie
Peterborough lost on penalties to Sheffield Wednesday in their League One play-off semi-final second leg tonight
Peterborough United let a four-goal lead slip to miss out on a chance at promotion in a dramatic League One play-off semi-final at Sheffield Wednesday tonight.
The Posh came to Hillsborough off the back of a 4-0 first leg lead from last Friday against a team that finished 19 points above them in the league table.
Despite losing 4-0 at the end of 90 minutes in the return leg, an own goal from Wednesday's Lee Gregory gave Posh an aggregate lead of 5-4 in extra time.
Callum Paterson then levelled the tie to take the game to penalties, which the home side won 5-3 to send them to Wembley.
Posh fans considered themselves big underdogs in the first leg, having only made the play-offs on the last game of the season.
Wednesday, who finished the season in 3rd place and just two points from automatic promotion, were the strong favourites to win over the two matches.
Posh collapse proves costly after healthy first-leg lead
Peterborough were on course to face either Bolton or Barnsley at Wembley in the League One play-off final on Monday, May 29.
But now, Posh miss out on a chance of promotion straight back to the Championship after one season away.
Bolton are away to Barnsley for their second-leg tie tomorrow night, with the fixture precariously poised at 1-1.
