One of the two lanes on the A1 near Peterborough will remain closed for "a few weeks" after a lorry crashed into the barriers.

The road between the A47 in Wansford and A605 in Chesterton was closed southbound at about 3:30pm yesterday afternoon (2nd November).

National Highways undertook emergency repairs on the barriers overnight and it was only reopened early this morning.

But they say one of the two lanes will remain closed- potentially for weeks- as they fix structural damage caused to the bridge on the road.

See the damage done to the barrier below:

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "The A1 southbound between the junction with the A47 (Wansford) and junction 17 (Fletton) was closed yesterday (2nd November) following a serious collision involving an HGV.

"National Highways and emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 2.55pm.

"Lane 2 of the carriageway was reopened just before 4.40am.

"Unfortunately, due to severe damage to the nearside barrier and surrounding infrastructure, lane 1 is expected to remain closed for a significant amount of time while safety inspections and repairs are carried out.

"While we don’t yet have an estimated time for the lane to reopen, further updates will be shared at www.trafficengland.com and travel apps.

"Updates will also be shared as soon as they are available via the regional X (Twitter) feed @HighwaysEAST."
