Personal trainer in Fens shares key for gymgoers to beat Christmas hangover
A report's found almost a fifth of people find exercise boring
As gymgoers plan to lose those extra Christmas calories, a personal trainer in Cambridgeshire is telling us how best to motivate them.
More than three quarters of people aspire to be fit, while 48% exercise on a regular basis, according to PureGym's latest annual report.
While 32% of people want to improve their energy levels, 29% feel their mental health can be improved.
"With new clients who contact me ready for the new year, that's (motivation) usually quite easy because a new year is naturally a motivating time to achieve new goals," Will Mason, a personal trainer in the Fens, said.
"But for current clients and gymgoers in general who stop before Christmas and looking to restart in the new year, this can be more tricky as they need a reason to do it all again."
'Short-term goals'
Puregym's report shows 31% of people don't exercise because they dislike exercise itself, an increase on last year's total, while 17% find exercise boring.
Will - who opened his private training studio in August 2020 - has around 100 weekly clients attend sessions including one-to-ones and group classes.
Through creating plans with existing clients, he hopes this will help achieve their goals.
"For these people, it's important to make achievable short-term goals throughout January and gradually build their training back up to where it was," he added.
"You get to see the changes not only in their physique and performance but improvements in their confidence, mood and things such as how happy they are to fit in a new dress size or shirt; it's not always about the physique changes."
