More parts of Cambridgeshire are due to get the green light on 20mph speed limits today.

County councillors are set to roll out 20 more areas in the latest round of schemes which is planned to cost £350,000.

A report published by Cambridgeshire County Council ahead of its highways and transport committee meeting later said there were 88 applications from community groups, parish and town councils for funding to implement 20mph zones.

The report said 20 of the schemes had been identified to be prioritised for funding in 2023/24, which is estimated to cost the county council £348,000.

The meeting comes after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was planning to limit the amount of power that local authorities in England have in imposing 20mph zones, according to several newspaper reports.

Road safety will improve thanks to drop to 20mph - council

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council said demand for 20mph limits from local communities is high.

"To date, around £220,000 has been spent delivering 13 new 20mph zones under the current process," the spokesperson said.

"Reducing speed limits from 30mph to 20mph can cut pollution by 30% and reduce the chance of a severe or fatal injury in the event of a collision by up to 60%.

"Studies have shown even a 1mph drop in speed reduces collisions by 6%.

"The increased safety of lower speeds also gives people the confidence to use more active methods of travelling on these roads, such as cycling and walking."
