Police search in Mepal leads to arrest and evacuation of homes

Officers found suspicious items at a property in Brick Lane and called in bomb disposal experts, prompting a 100-metre cordon and precautionary evacuations

A man has been arrested after police searched a property in Brick Lane, Mepal, yesterday (21 May) and found suspicious items.

During the search, officers put a 100-metre cordon in place and called in specialist explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officers, who safely removed the items.

Several nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, with residents allowed to return at about 8pm.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of stalking, criminal damage, threats to kill, possession of a firearm, and possession of an explosive substance. He remains in custody at Parkside Police Station.

A police spokesperson said: “The area is now safe and investigations are ongoing.”
