People near Cambridge are preparing to face a seventh day without safe tap water today.

More than three hundred homes in the Marleigh area have been relying on bottled water since last Thursday night.

In a statement yesterday, Independent Water Networks (IWN) said initial test results have shown "no bacterial concerns.

"We are continuing to work with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to determine what the contaminate could be before we’re able to advise you that your water is safe to use normally."

It comes as IWN's original 'do not use' notice was downgraded to a 'do not drink' notice, meaning people can use their water for the likes of bathing, showering and laundry but not for cleaning your teeth, giving to pets or cooking food.

Catherine lives in Marleigh:

"Mostly I've used bottled water for drinking and cooking; I think if it was smelling funny which some people have had, I'd be a bit more concerned but at the moment, I'm not," she said.

"It's definitely causing a lot of inconvenience particularly for people that are being more precautious with washing and laundry, and bottled water doesn't really suffice.

"Staying calm and going off what information we have to hand I think is the most important thing.

"For me, it's one of those things you have to get on with; if it was continuing for a lot longer, I'd be thinking what else is going to happen but what can you do?"

John Trounson, director at IWN, told Greatest Hits Radio that the company has appreciated the response after the concerns were raised.

"I'd like to say how grateful we are for people's understanding during this difficult time," he said.

"We've been working extremely hard and regret the inconvenience to people, but ensuring we can provide a safe and healthy supply of water is our top priority."

IWN said bottled water continues to be available from the Marleigh Community Centre.
