An outdoor swimming pool in Cambridge dating back more than 100 years is back up and running to the public.

Jesus Green Lido - which first opened in August 1923 - was closed for maintenance work last month and is one of a few pools built in from that era left standing in the country.

It was originally known as one of the longest swimming pools in Britain, stretching 91 metres in length and just 14 metres in width.

The lido had to close for a month for maintenance work, which included repainting the pool lanes and walls, but is now back open in time for the bank holiday weekend.

"It's an important place"

Annie Morgan James is from the Friends of Jesus Green Lido committee:

"People love to meet other swimmers, it's an important place for people who are training for triathlons, for people to play and enjoy," she said.

"When you push through the turnstile, you come into a portal of a magical world even in the slightly misty rainy day, it's a beautiful blue, surrounded by trees and there's a sense of peace and tranquility."

Jesus Green Lido was known as one of the longest pools in Britain when it first opened

By opening in the winter, the lido has allowed swimmers to meet at more times of the year before it needed maintenance work.

Annabel Wright is assistant manager at Jesus Green Lido:

"There are still a few cracks here and there but the pool is more than 100-years-old, unless we scrape out the whole thing, which is a risk that it's probably not worth it because as soon as you start messing it around, because of the pressure of the river, it could flood the whole thing," she said.

"We've had a lot of people commenting on our Facebook posts saying they're going to come at the weekend.

"We've also opened it up that anyone under 16-years-old can get in for free this weekend, so hopefully the turnout will be good."

Many people who've got a connection with Jesus Green Lido have also been contributing to a new book.

The book - called 100 yards, 100 voices, a centenary of swimming at Jesus Green Lido - focuses on the importance of the swimming pool throughout its history, as well as interviews, paintings and portraits of the Lido.
