Hundreds of visitors due to descend on Ely Cathedral for Coronation
The venue is due to stage three days of events
Hundreds of visitors are expected to descend on one of Cambridgeshire’s most well-known attractions to mark the Coronation of King Charles III this weekend.
Ely Cathedral is due to hold three days of events from Friday, 5 May to Sunday, 7 May, including a screening of the Coronation itself on Saturday, 6 May.
A flower exhibit in the shape of the Coronation emblem and a service of thanksgiving are also planned to take place.
“It all kicks off this Friday when the cathedral will be adorned with bunting and floral displays,” Jocelyn Palmer, events manager at Ely Cathedral, said.
“We’ve got a big screen on Saturday, and it is free entry to everybody on the day.
“To be able to share these huge occasions to allow the local community to be together and watch this historic event is very important to us.”
The cathedral’s Octagon Tower will be lit red, white and blue, while a Coronation tea party has been organised for Saturday.
Around 500 to 600 people are expected to attend over the three days, at a venue that has previously established links to the royal family, including hosting episodes of Netflix series The Crown.
“Every time you think it’s Westminster when you see a wedding scene, it’s usually the cathedral,” Jocelyn added.
“I think it’s about providing a place where the local community can come together and celebrate this occasion.”
