High pollen to hit Cambridgeshire as temperatures set to soar
A pharmacist has shared his top tips for hay fever sufferers this weekend
Hay fever sufferers in Cambridgeshire are being warned to be careful if they're going out and about amid high pollen rates this weekend.
The Met Office said pollen levels are set to remain high in the east until the end of the week.
Anil Sharma, who also suffers from hay fever, runs pharmacies across the county and has seen demand for hay fever medication increase.
“We used to stock hay fever remedies from April to September and replace them with cough and cold remedies other times of the year,” he said.
“That’s completely changed now.
“We have a section in all our pharmacies that stock hay fever remedies all year round because people do suffer with hay fever all year.”
"We'll have high level of hay fever most of the time"
Temperatures in the east of England could reach as high as 30C this weekend, with thunderstorms and heavy rain also forecast.
And Cambridgeshire could be one area to be hit with this weather and high pollen.
“In our area, we’ll have a high level of hay fever most of the time because of the agricultural nature of the area,” said Mr Sharma.
It comes as a heat health alert for the region and five others in England was issued by the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office stretching from 9am today to 9am on Monday.
Regular washing and no to alcohol some of the top tips
Mr Sharma has shared some tips for those with hay fever during the hot weather, such as:
- Shower as often as possible when you’ve been outside
- Wear wraparound sunglasses to prevent pollen going into your eyes, especially while driving
- Regularly wash your hands to remove pollen
- Put vaseline or barrier cream underneath your nose to prevent pollen from entering your nose
- Not drying laundry outside during hot weather in summer months to stop pollen from sticking to clothing
- Not drinking too much alcohol which contains histamine that could trigger an allergic reaction
