The former fire station in Papworth Everard could be demolished to make way for new houses.

Plans have been submitted to South Cambridgeshire District Council to redevelop the old fire station in Elm Way to provide new homes.

The fire station was sold at auction at the end of last year after Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service relocated the staff based at the site to the station in Cambourne, in March 2022.

The 1950s building and the training tower could now both be demolished and four two-bedroom terraced houses built in its place.

In planning documents submitted by Greater London Demolition, it said the land could be “used more effectively for housing”.

The plans said: “The design of the terraced houses will be sympathetic to the character of Papworth Everard and constructed from materials inspired by the local vernacular.

“The buildings will be of a similar scale and form to neighbouring properties.

“However, because of the proximity to the Ermine STreet typical houses, which are in a conservation area, the development is intentionally designed to be less prominent and discrete.

“The development on this under-utilised site will enhance the local environment.

“We believe the proposals, with its sensitive design approach, will preserve the character, appearance, and setting of the village.”
