A £1.8 million pound flood prevention scheme has been completed in Peterborough.

Anglian Water began their @one Alliance scheme last June, and includes a new storage tank, new sewer pipes, upgrades at the Wessex Close pumping station, and several other projects.

The City is set to benefit from growth in the coming years, as one of the fastest-growing cities in the UK. Anglian Water say the project will help to support this, and protect locals and the environment from extreme flooding.

The storage tank has been installed underneath the field off Celta Road in Fletton and can hold 150,000 litres of water during heavy rainfall until the network frees up. Then, it can be transported through to Peterborough’s Water Recycling Centre (WRC) to be fully treated before it’s returned safely back into the environment.

The pumping station has new equipment and an increased capacity of sewers during heavy downpours.

Peterborough's new flood prevention measures have been coupled with projects from the water supplier including new water pipes for homes in Great Haddon, and the rollout of smart meters for the city.

The water company also invested £11.6 million at Peterborough’s WRC which included the installation of two new storm water tanks large enough to hold enough rainwater to fill eight Olympic sized swimming pools.

Chloe Bailey, Customer Co-Ordinator for the project said: “We’re pleased to have recently finished our work across Peterborough to support the growing community as well as helping to protect the local community from future flooding events.

“As a result of climate change, we’re seeing more bouts of extreme weather, so it was important that we prepared the area to store extra storm water before it’s treated and returned to the environment.

“We’d like to thank our customers across Peterborough for their patience over the past few months while we completed this essential work.”
