Disqualified driver seen drinking vodka behind the wheel jailed
The 56 year old was spotted drinking by a member of the public in Somersham
A disqualified driver who was seen drinking vodka behind the wheel has been jailed.
56 year old Ian Bowers was spotted drinking by a member of the public in Somersham on 9 October at about 10.40am.
They called Cambridgeshire Police who found Bowers asleep at the wheel of a parked Vauxhall Combo van in Church Street. He refused to unlock the vehicle and drove off.
Despite officers indicating that he should pull over Bowers kept driving until he reached the High Street, where another crew deployed a stinger.
Bowers was arrested and failed to provide a breath specimen for analysis at the roadside.
He was taken into custody where he again refused to provide a sample.
Bowers, of Parkhall Road, Somersham, admitted dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and driving without insurance.
He was jailed at Peterborough Crown Court for 17 months.
PC Alan Stanford said: “Bowers’ behaviour was completely irresponsible.
“Fortunately, he was stopped after a brief pursuit and nobody was injured due to his actions.”
