Cyclist who hit pedestrian after running red light in Cambridge jailed
It left a 56 year old man with a bleed on the brain and a fractured skull
A cyclist who hit a pedestrian after running a red light in Cambridge has been sentenced.
Lucasz Pietrzyk, 40, of The Rowans, Milton, was cycling along Elizabeth Way at about 3.45pm on 4 May 2022 when he failed to stop at a pedestrian crossing and hit a member of the public.
The pedestrian, a 56-year-old man, was knocked to the ground and hit his head. He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull and was treated there for seven months.
At Cambridge Crown Court today (30/11), Pietrzyk, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months after pleading guilty to causing bodily harm by wanton/furious driving.
PC Tom Robinson, from the Road Policing Unit, who investigated, said: “The cyclist accepted being at fault in the first instance and demonstrated remorse from the outset but his lapse in concentration has left a man with life changing injuries. The victim now suffers with severe memory loss and has complex needs as a result of the incident.
“Cyclists, like any other road users, are obliged to take reasonable care to avoid causing damage to others using or present on the road.”
