A motion calling for a review into where and when 20mph speed limits are introduced across Cambridgeshire has failed to pass.

County Councillors were asked to reconsider the schemes today and allow local people to have more of a say.

It's after a petition calling for the blanket 20mph zone in Ely to be scrapped passed 2000 signatures.

A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesperson said: “We’re aware of the updated guidance issued by government on the 17 March on ‘Setting Local Speed Limits’."

"The most significant updates to the guidance on speed limits include an increased emphasis on early consultation of all those who may be affected and consideration on a road-by-road basis based on the safety case to ensure local support.

“We’re committed to improving road safety, and 20mph schemes are one part of this. The benefits of introducing a 20mph limit is to reduce casualties, encourage active travel, reduce congestion, and air pollution.

"20mph schemes are introduced at local request working with the town or parish council as well as the local councillors and residents. For future schemes we will be undertaking both informal and statutory consultations in line with the new guidance.”
