17th century escape tunnel under house for sale in Cambridgeshire
It was likely used by Protestants and Catholics after Henry VIII created the Church of England
A house in Fowlmere with a tunnel used to escape religious authorities after the creation of the Church of England has been put up for sale.
The Grade II listed semi-detached cottage is thought to date from 1670.
The Tunnel goes from Hill View Cottage and joins up with several historic properties in the village, with a small central meeting room.
It was likely used by Catholics and Protestants as an escape route when persons of authority visited, so as to avoid persecution.
This could be the last remaining access to the tunnel, with others having been sealed off.
