Cambridge United performed the great escape after a 2-0 win at Forest Green Rovers on a dramatic final day of the season.

With results falling in their favour and both MK Dons and Morecambe failing to win, Cambridge United have avoided the drop.

There had been a slight resurgence in form recently, earning four wins from seven in April, but in the end it wasn't enough.

Defeat at Burton Albion earlier in the week meant they had to rely on favours from elsewhere on the final day of the season.

Manager Mark Bonner guided Cambridge to promotion from League Two in the 2020/21 season as runners-up after seven seasons in that division, but after two years in League One, the U's will be playing in the third tier once again next season.

MK Dons' 0-0 draw with Burton, and Morecambe's 3-2 loss at Exeter today means The 'U's jump 20th and avoid the drop by just one point.

Their victory means that today's opponents Forest Green Rovers, along side Accrington Stanley, Morecambe and MK Dons, have been relegated to league 2
