A major car park at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge has partially reopened following a fire caused by an accidental mechanical fault in a diesel vehicle.

Car Park 1, initially designed to accommodate 1,050 vehicles, was reopened on 19th December 2025 at 6pm after structural surveys confirmed it was safe to use.

The car park is now operating with a reduced capacity of 973 spaces, with 77 spaces on levels 2 and 3 cordoned off for repair works in areas affected by the blaze.

The necessary repairs, expected to take between three to six months to complete, will be conducted in the evenings and at weekends where possible to limit disruption for users of the car park, according to NCP.

Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) extended thanks to Cambridge Fire and Rescue Service, NCP, local councils, Cambridge Biomedical Campus Ltd, and Stagecoach, along with staff and patients, for their cooperation while managing the impact of reduced parking.

Partners continue to assist by providing additional parking spaces to help ease pressure on hospital visitors, staff, and patients while repair work is underway.
