The Conservative MP for Huntingdon, Ben Obese-Jecty, has spoken out after receiving racist abuse on social media following his comments on the launch of Rupert Loweās new organisation, Restore Britain.
Mr Obese-Jecty described the messages he received as "shocking but sadly not surprising."
The abuse followed Mr Obese-Jecty retweeting a post by Rupert Lowe, the Independent MP for Great Yarmouth, about the cost of joining Restore Britain, which Mr Obese-Jecty has called a ānon-party issue-based membership organisationā launched by Mr Lowe.
It included being compared to a monkey, calls for deportation, demands to be banned from British politics for being a āforeigner,ā and other racist insults such as being called an āUncle Tomā and a āhalf-African gutter snipe.ā
Mr Obese-Jecty said: āThere is no place in our politics for racist abuse and whilst I appreciate that being a Member of Parliament makes you a target, I shouldnāt expect the social media supporters of a fellow MP to send messages like these.ā
āHaving served my country in the British Army, and now as a Member of Parliament, I am staggered that there are those who still see the colour of my skin as an issue.ā
Mr Obese-Jecty claims that he raised the issue with Rupert Lowe directly, but the two MPs were unable to agree on whether the abuse was a matter Rupert Lowe should support him on.
Greatest Hits Radio has approached Mr Lowe for a comment.
