12 people have been rescued from the back of a lorry in Huntingdonshire.

Police report that they received a 999 call last week from a man who said he was trapped in the back of a lorry with 11 other people.

The caller, who had just 1% battery remaining on his phone, said they had been banging on the side of the lorry for hours in an attempt to alert the driver but had been unsuccessful.

He also reported that they were cold and concerned for the welfare of everyone on board.

Officers managed to locate the lorry in Alconbury Weald and found 12 individuals, including five children aged between 15 and 17, squashed at the top of pallets of fruit.

All were checked over by ambulance crews, given food and drink, and were reported to be unharmed.

The driver of the lorry was initially arrested on suspicion of human trafficking but was later released with no further action.

The children have been taken into police protection, and the investigation is ongoing.
