The team behind a Bristol boatyard, destroyed by a fire on Saturday (6 May) say they are "absolutely committed" to rebuilding it.

Underfall Yard was gutted by a blaze in the early hours of Saturday, the cause of which is still unclear.

Nearby residents had to be evacuated from the area as the Avon Fire and Rescue Service battled through the night to put it out.

Footage shared on social media at the time showed huge flames rising above the surrounding buildings.

The team behind the yard has now released a statement online.

"The fire has destroyed the heart of the yard where most of the boat building activity takes place," they said.

"Tenant's businesses and boats have been ruinied.

"We are supporting our tenants as best we can.

"Thankfully no one was killed and no one was injured, but a lot of people in the Underfall Yard community have been impacted: our staff, our tenants, our volunteers and our neighbours on Avon Crescent and Nova Scotia Place and our hearts are with them."

Several people have offered donations to the yard's Just Giving page to help with repairs.

We spoke to one man at the scene on Saturday morning who had been woken by the fire.

"At about quarter to one, it sounded like fireworks going off," he said.

"The dog got upset, jumping all up and down and everything and then the missus got up to try and calm him down and said you better have a look out the window, and it was just one massive orange glow...

"It's a wicked shame because it was a lovely old boat yard wasn't it."

Another woman said she was "gutted" for Bristol.

"Terrible, really, really terrible," she said.

"So sad for the boatyard and the boat owners because I can see obviously there's some vessels that have been destroyed.

"It's really tragic."

The emergency services are investigating the cause and are yet to confirm whether they believe foul play was involved or not.
