Residents have been evacuated from several homes in a town near Bath, after a fire led to the discovery of several suspicious items.

Avon and Somerset Police say they were first made aware of issues at a residential property in Timsbury by Avon Fire and Rescue Service once the fire was extinguished.

In a statement posted on X the police said: "Public safety is always our paramount concern. Therefore we notified the EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team) of the situation and implemented as a precaution a cordon at their request.

"EOD are at the scene."

Residents forced to evacuate have been told they can use nearby Congrye Hall to gather and access support.

A man who required some medical attention, has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

Initially a 100 metre cordon was put in place but that has now been reduced in size.

"EOD have attended the property and have worked to ensure the items found are now safe," an update from the police reads.

"Therefore, we have been able to reduce the size of the cordon to minimise the impact on the community.

"Emergency services remain in the area and we will continue to provide further updates."
