A scooter rider has been seriously injured after being hit by a drink driver on the outskirts of Bristol.

It happened just after 7pm last night (December 29) on Court Road in Oldland Common.

Avon and Somerset Police say the man's injuries were initially thought to be life threatening, though that is no longer the case.

A woman has been arrested and released under investigation, on suspicion of drink driving and causing serious injury by careless driving.

Court Road was closed between West Street and The Croft while investigators examined the scene.

Officers are now keen to speak to anyone who witnessed what happened and/or has dashcam footage, either of the crash itself or the moments beforehand.

You can get in touch by calling 101 and quoting the reference number 5222309341.

It comes as police nationwide deal with a spike in drink drive incidents over the Christmas and New Year period.

A specialist campaign targeting drink and drug drivers this Christmas saw 169 people arrested across Avon and Somerset in three weeks from November 21.

Acting Chief Inspector Andy Barry, Avon and Somerset Police’s lead for Op Tonic, says it is not acceptable and there are "no excuses" for driving under the influence.

“There is no safe way to drink or drug drive – you need to find another way to get home," he said.

“We also want to remind people that if you are out drinking in the evening, there remains a real possibility you could be over the limit in the morning too and not safe to drive.

"So again, plan ahead and if you need to drive the following day, don’t drink.

"If you choose to drink and drive, there is a high chance of being intercepted by our officers.”
